For a few seconds. Then he turns around and walks back into the living room as if nothing had happened.
Perhaps he also gets up at night and wanders. Perhaps he no longer greets you at the door, even though he hears you. Perhaps he forgets a command he knew for ten years.
That is not simply "getting old". Age-related cognitive changes in dogs have their own technical term – cognitive dysfunction syndrome – and it is more common than most owners suspect. In studies of dogs over eleven years old, a considerable share shows at least one sign.
The most important sentence first: Have this checked by a vet. Similar pictures also arise with pain, declining hearing, thyroid or kidney problems. Only after that does the question of what can be done nutritionally make sense.
Why an old brain has an energy problem
The brain normally covers its energy needs almost entirely from glucose. With age, the ability of nerve cells to use glucose efficiently declines – imaging studies show this very clearly in humans, and comparable observations exist in dogs.
But the nerve cell can burn something else as well: ketone bodies. And these are formed from medium-chain fatty acids – above all from caprylic acid, C8.
This is exactly why MCT oil in this product is not a carrier as in our other formulas, but an active ingredient. At 60 grams per kilogram it is the largest single component of the lipid phase by amount.
The second pillar: DHA
While C8 delivers the energy, DHA is about structure. This fatty acid is a main building block of nerve cell membranes – and the membrane is where signal transmission takes place.
Added to this are lecithin as a choline source, coenzyme Q10 for the mitochondria, a complete B complex and a robust antioxidant system.
What you can realistically expect
None of this turns back time. What a good nutritional strategy can achieve is support – alongside veterinary assessment, fixed daily routines, exercise and mental stimulation. These four things are more important than any supplement, this one included.
Dosage: 1 millilitre per kilogram of body weight
A 10 kg dog receives 10 ml daily, a 30 kg dog 30 ml. Introduce over ten to fourteen days – with MCT at this amount that is particularly important, because medium-chain fatty acids can cause soft stool if started too quickly.
